The Four C's of Colored Gemstones
The four C's of colored gems (rubies, emeralds, topaz,
sapphires, etc.) is color, color, color, and color!
Keep this in mind when purchasing gem jewelry. The finer and
the rarer the color, the less impact cutting, clarity and carat weight
will have on the value of the gem. When we speak about color we
are not just talking about hue. We are talking about the type of
hue. As a general rule the closer a stone's color is to the pure
spectral hue (pure red, to pure violet) the better the color is
considered to be and the rarer and more valuable the stone. For
Example, if we consider a blue stone, the purer the blue color the
better the color. When we look at a stone we look for a lack of
undertones (tint). In the case of pure blue we look for a stone
having no undertones (tint) of any other color such as green, red, gray,
or black. Unfortunately, there is no such a thing in nature as a
perfectly pure color. All colored stones have their color
modified by distinctive undertones. In describing color we often
refer to these factors:
-
Hue- The precise
spectral color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet).
-
Intensity (or
saturation)- The brightness or vividness of color. It can also
refer to the dullness or drabness of a stone's color.
-
Tone- How much black,
white, gray, or brown is present (how light or dark a stone is)
-
Distribution- How even or
uneven the distribution of color is in the stone. In general stones that are
either very pale of very dark sell for less (specially those with a depth of
color that approaches black).
The cut of the stone can also
affect the price. Aside from the practicality of the stone's cut shape the
cut of the stone can significantly reduce the vividness and alter the depth of
color. How to determine if the cut of a stone is good? This is
simple, when you examine a colored stone that looks lively to your eyes and has
good color--not to dark and not too pale-- you can assume the cut is good.
If the stone's color is poor, even if the stone was cut improperly, one can
assume the basic material was poor.
As with
diamonds, colored gems
are measured in carats except for pearls and coral. Normally the greater
the weight, the larger the stone the greater the value per carat.
Finally, we must consider
clarity. Clarity refers to the absence of internal flaws or inclusions.
Flawlessness in colored stones is even rarer than in diamonds. However,
unlike in diamonds flawlessness of color stones depends on the color of the
stone. Light, pastel colored stones will require better clarity because
flaws are more visible. In darker toned stones the flaws may not be as
important a variable because they are masked by the depth of color. The
type and placement of the flaws are more important considerations. For
example, a large crack on the surface of the stone will actually weaken a stone
and/or can break light continuity. This light discontinuity can cause an
iridescent effect that could detract from the stone's beauty. But a
fracture positioned in and unobtrusive part of the stone will have a minimal
effect on its durability and even on its beauty. However, any flaw you
find on a stone could be an opportunity to bargain for the price. However,
some flaws actually help a gemologist or jeweler to identify a stone. In
some cases, the presence of a particular flaw may provide positive
identification of the exact variety or origin, and actually cause an increase in
the per-carat value.
